The great debate: Who should play Christian Grey?

I had the pleasure of attending a 50 Shades of Grey party hosted by Pure Romance this past weekend...with a pregame of Magic Mike in theaters to get our adrenaline pumping of course. Hollywood could have done us all a favor and showed that one in 3D, just sayin’.  Now I won’t go into details as I prefer to keep this little space PG-13 (Heck, I don’t even think an R rating would cover it), but this did spur a heated discussion on who should be cast as Christian Grey in the movie.  Debate on Ana was of course pushed to the wayside…

Infamous quotables from the night:
“Christian definitely needs to be clean-cut, but extremely sexy when disheveled"
"I think the actor needs to be able to portray being intense and not have that cheesy smile"

"I'm working on becoming less vanilla..."
The Main Contenders:
1. Alexander Skarsguard?
This True Blood star is my top pick, hands down (35)
2. Robert Pattinson?
No, no, no. Too mainstream. Die hard twi-hard (26)
3. Ian Somerhalder?

of The Vampire Diaries. What’s with all these vampires? No me gusta (33)
4.  Ryan Gosling?

Have you seen Ryan Gosling's GQ photo shoot? Grey silk tie anyone? (31)
5. Bradley Cooper?
He would have to stray away from that cheesy smile (37)
6. Matt Bomer?
Semi-star of Magic Mike. Hmm he fits the bill when it comes to Christian’s jawline and “Greek god” appearance, but could he pull of such a dark role? (34)
7. Christian Bale
A tad past his prime perhaps, but could pull off the dark side of Gray, based on his performance in American Psycho (38)
8. Henry Cavill?
Have you seen the Dunhill London ads featuring Henry Cavill? Do they not scream 'Fifty'? (29)
9. Andrew Garfield?
The new Spiderman has the copper hair described in the books, but may bee to slim, wiry, and boyish to be convincing (28)
When someone suggested Zac Efron, I about screamed. Keep in mind, Gray is 27 in the trilogy.

And for all you non-confomists out there, check out 50 Shades of Misunderstanding, then 101 books to read instead of 50 Shades, ha!

Will it be humanly possible for one character to pull of Grey’s multi-faceted dimensions? Who could you imagine in jeans hung low across the hips?
Word on the street is a 4th 50 Shades is set to debut in October! Sigh, gush, gasp. Baby Boom 2k12, here we come!

Pssttt... Go check out my attempts to be as funny as Alyx in my guest post I Gots the Baby Fever!

Thank you for the early morning eye candy! If I am not mistaken Henry Cavill was in the showtime series "The Tudors". Hot. Great choices.

My personal favourite would be [hands down] Matt Bomer. But I guess we have to wait and see, who ends up getting the part.

Love,

I seriously don't know how they are going to make a movie. But I will watch anything with any of them in it! I vote A-Skars or Matt Bomer

A 4th 50 Shades?? Yes, please! I have to vote for Ian (whoever) or Matt Boomer. I also think Chase Crawford would be a good choice. I love Ryan Gosling, but I think he is too old.

thanks for that lovely morning eye candy. Out of your list I like Matt Bomer the best. But I would love to see Colin Egglesfield (he played Dex in the Something Borrowed movie).

Mr. Skarsgard - hands down. No debate. Love him and his abs (and his oh so sexy thigh creases)...LOL

I am just getting into the first book but the picture in my head is definitely Ian. Other than the hair he has the perfect look. Although now that you mention him, I could see Alexander fitting the part as well.

Wait another 50 Shades book...be still my heart. I LOVE Henry Cavill, I'll watch him in anything. And as even though I am a die hard Christian Bale fan....I think he may be a tad to old for the role now...I mean Christian Grey is supposed to be my age....

Beautifully Quirky said...

Loving the eye candy, of course.... but I always pictured Hayden Christensen as Mr. Grey!

Danavee said...

This is a big deal. He has to be perfect. I vote #6 and #8!

Its so hard to choose just one! Ian is my school girl crush, but Henry is my top choice for Christian.

Henry Cavill all the way. HOTTTT!

I remember how depressed I was when I saw Robert P. as Edward for the first time. Not that he's not a handsome dude, but Edward was supposed to be BEYOND beautiful, and I personally didn't get that. I think 50 Shades will have a similar issue. There's no way they will be able to please everyone. I wish wish wish they would make this an HBO series- it could be so much sexier!!
For the record, though I've never seen The Vampire Diaries, my vote is for the hottie Ian! ;)

I think matt bomer would be perfect or perhaps even ian but i'm not sure if anyone could be better than the image of christian I have created in my mind :)

Loved those books, such a great trilogy!

I would not be sad with any of these choices - goddess knows I love me some Christian Bale - but I am of the Michael Fassbender-for-Christian-Grey camp. I would also not be sad if he were played by Richard Armitage.

I haven't read 50 shades yet but I'm going to...and I can't wait!

Anyway...I think that either Mr. Trueblood or Ryan Gosling should play Mr. Grey. mmmmmmmm. Great man ass this morning though!

If they pick douchey R-Patz I'm out. Doesn't he just seem to whiny for such a strong character?

Not So Newlyweds said...

Matt Bomer would be great! I also think Chris Pine would be a hit! If any of the vampire people play any part in the movie, I may cry.

OMG I'm totally on board for having Mr. Bomer play Grey! That's exactly what I envision when I'm reading the storyline.. Is it cool that I just leave this post up on my computer all day to stare at the eyecandy?! #motivation

First of all I LOVED the Fifty Shades trilogy, second, you need to google "Nelson Piquet Jr." I think he would make the perfect Christian Gray in the movie haha, love the other choices about though!

I've never seen Henry Cavill, it could work. But I have read the book and YAY for the 4th possibly coming out in Oct. But the ENTIRE time I was reading them MY Christan was Colin Egglisfield. He was SO HOTT, as Dex in Something Borrowed. Rent it if you have not seen it. It will all make sense!

Ashley K said...

Yep yep Alexander Skarsgaurd all the way anything that comes out of that mans mouth is mesmerizing! Ian Somerhalder is really good too but Alex is by far my fave.

Michaela {au naturel design} said...

I also asked about seeing Magic Mike in 3D ;) I'd vote for Matt Bomer or Christian Bale. At least with 50 Shades there will be nudity and a story to follow, unlike the weak story line behind Magic Mike. But then again, I got what I wanted to see ;)

Melissa said...

You can't spell Christian without IAN. I love him - obsessed may be a more accurate word - and if his seemingly endless head tilting in TVD is any indicator, he would make a perfect Christian.

Lindsay said...

My picks for Christian Grey are Chris Pine or Chris Hemsworth. But, I saw a picture of some guy (no idea who) that's perfect for Christian!

Ian or Matt, hands down.

LOVE this post because this is exactly what my friends and I are talking about. The infamous question of who should play Mr. Grey. I love the photo collage you gave because now I can really compare the options. My vote is still going with Alexander Skarsgard. I think he would be perfect to play such a multi-dimensional character.

I always pictured Matt Bomer when I was reading the books. Thank you for such a fun blog to read- I found you when I linked up to the Bloggers Coast to Coast.

My best friend and I have been pro-Matt Bomer since the day they announced it was going to be a movie. No one else fits for me.

Ian Somerhalder or the Dude from Son's of Anarchy!

While I love the eye candy, I could not stand 50 Shades, so I hope none of my favs play Christina!

I like Ian Sommerholder, myself.

I gotta go with either Ryan or Bradley! Love them both. Matt Bomer would be fine by me, as well. Heck, any of these gents get my vote (except maybe Rob. Sorry, Twi-fans).

Kathleen said...

I'm all for Matt Bomer being Christian Grey. I totally think he could pull off a darker side. I mean he's already shown us he has a super sexy side. And if he can handle stripping and putting his goods all over a woman, I think he can handle the kink in 50 Shades! lol I'm your newest follower! : )

I've just started reading the first one and I can hardly put it down! I would love to see Ryan Gosling or Matt Bomer as Christian Grey. Unfortunately, I think Robert Pattinson would just ruin it for me. I've never understood his appeal.

The Lovely One said...

Ryan Gosling is the answer. Hello, Mr. Grey! But honestly, how good do you think the movie will be? It can't be porn, and I'm not sure there's much more to the first book than that!

we recently had this discussion with my girlfriends too but we didn't think of Henry Cavill. He is gorgeous. Loved him in the Tudors. ahhh, he should play Christian..........

Henry Cavill IS Christian Grey! His Dunhill ads on youtube do SCREAZM Fifty! He has the Look, the eyes ,the best body of all, that boyish smile & sexy smirk. On Tudors he played domineering, seductive, playboy, classy, charming & had no problem with the sex scenes. He looks like a greek god which Ana describes him as & has played one in Immortals. He is the whole package. He looks great in a suit & can be businesslike classy. He can also do painfully submissive. He is the only one on the list or spoken of that has the looks, played all traits & feelings Christian has AND has the body & done the steamy scenes so he is comfortable in his skin. I love Ian on VZD but his look is to hard & Christian has both a sensitive look without giving away he is a dominant. The only other who has played these sides is Alexnader Skarsgard & even though he is gorgeous,he does not look like a greek god. As for Ana Alexandra Daddario Is perfect she has the alabaster skin, blue eyes to big for her face. Long brown hair & pouty lips. She has an innocent beauty requiring no makeup & at 26 she looks 22 yet has the maturity for the steamy scenes. They would look great together.

Matt Bomer hands down!
I'm going to a 50 Shades themed Pure Romance party this Friday! I am so excited :D I really wish I could go see Magic Mike before hand, but I don't think I would be able to get a babysitter. Ugh, dang.
Thanks for all the eye candy!

Henry Cavil or Matt Bomer....Mmmhmm! Of course, Ryan Gosling gets my vote to play just about everything except the Hulk... ;)

Phwoar! What a thing to read on a Thursday morning!

My favourite choice is definitely Ryan Gosling, but I don't think he'd do it. And I wouldn't want Robert Pattinson in the role, because then he'd have starred in Twilight AND the Twilight fanfiction films. Apparently Ian Somerholder is actually quite keen!

So, I'm a little late to the game, but I think Ian Somerhalder has the broodiness to play Christian. Definitely. I don't think any of them would be a bad choice though!
I just finished the first book - and I'm going to pick up the second one tonight. I can't believe I'm so late on reading these!

My number one pick would also be Mat Bomer.

However...

Google images of Zac Effron. He may be overlooked for this part. It would be a stretch for him to play this role, but looks, age and appeal are all there.
